It is crazy traveling anywhere in December with the hordes of travelers. However, once you get past jostling with the crowds in the airport, you’ll feel rewarded by the exciting festivals and that personal experience discovering new things together!
Here are just five romantic destinations to visit at the end of the year.

Sweden

If you’re into snowy winters, Sweden is the place for you! In December, the streets will be blanketed with thick snow where you’ll get to have a white Christmas. It is so way up North that the weather is extremely cold, dropping to below zero degrees, but this is what makes the Northern Europe experience.
While you’re there, do all the things you can only do in snowy places like dog sledging and winter fishing! You can also see nature’s fascinating Northern Lights in the Swedish Lapland. It’s kind of like star-gazing, but instead of seeing stars, you’re looking at magical aurora lights dancing in the sky! Beats star gazing, doesn’t it? Many flock to the Northern Hemisphere just to catch a glimpse of this natural phenomenon.
Northern Lights tours start from 1239 euros (SGD 2045).

Stroll hand in hand along the snow clad streets of Sweden while visiting a Christmas market. There’s plenty to choose from in big cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg. It doesn’t get any more Christmassy than eating traditional Swedish Christmas food and browsing handicrafts in these wooden huts.

Don’t forget to visit the historical centre of Gamla Stan and the Kalmar Castle. The old school architecture will make you feel like you’re part of a fairy tale!
Why not check into an ice hotel? What better way to snuggle than in a room made entirely of snow and ice.
Check out the ICEHOTEL located in Jukkasjärvi! With decorations designed by ice artists, it’s like you’re in Frozen. A room at the ICEHOTEL will set you back SEK 2,500 (SGD 452) a night. Sure, it’s a little pricey, but think of what you’ll get to tell your friends back home about staying in a room made of ice and snow!

Everyone loves going to Japan during the cherry blossom season, but November and December are just as wonderful with the many illumination festivals.
At the end of the year, an illumination event (Hanatouro) takes place in Arashiyama, where bamboo grove pathways and the streets are lighted up with lanterns. It’s enchanting just taking a walk down the lighted paths in the evening!
If you’re there in time, you can also catch the illumination events happening in popular Shrines such as Kiyomizudera, Kodaiji and Sanzenin. These light up usually ends by early December and are meant for the autumn leaf season. Kyoto experiences a late autumn as it’s located in the south of Japan, and can be as late as November to December. However, the blossoming of autumn leaves can be unpredictable and are often fleeting. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see this spectacular sight!
Cozy up in a ryokan in Arashiyama, where you’ll get to soak in the hot springs in the cold and wake up to nature every morning. Book a stay in HOSHINOYA Kyoto, located by the river in Arashiyama. Oh yes, one more thing about this place, you’ll have to take a boat to get into the hotel. It’s like you’re in a world of your own away from city life! A room here starts at 36,000 Yen (SGD 434) a night.

Bora Bora

Can’t stand the cold? You can still enjoy a tropical getaway in Bora Bora, an island in the French Polynesia!
An image speaks a thousand words. I’m sure the images of Bora Bora alone are tempting enough for anyone. Bora Bora is known for its overwater bungalows owned by luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons, Intercontinental and the St. Regis. Nothing feels more private than having your own little shack atop the clear waters. If you’re into water sports, this place is your thing. Take a private boat out for a ride or swim with the black-tipped reef sharks and stingrays. You’ll get to see coral reefs too! Since you’re at the beach, what better way to start the day than catch the sunrise together?

Similar to the Maldives, Bora Bora is where couples can enjoy the romance of exclusivity. This is perhaps why it is one of the most popular honeymoon spots for couples. A room at the Hotel Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort starts at XPF 35,100 (SGD 486) a night.

Colmar, France

When you think of romance, France comes to mind. Perhaps it’s the soft demeanour of the French, the many chateaus or the luscious vineyard landscapes that pins France as a romantic destination. In any case, France is a must feature in this list. Paris is however overrated, seeing that you’ll never see a place more overpopulated with tourist buses every single day. Skip Paris and head east to the French town of Colmar!
If you love the historical atmosphere and cobblestone streets of Europe, you’ll love Colmar. Filled with coloured cottages, you’ll feel like you’re in a Hans Christian Andersen novel. When night falls, you’ll feel the magic with Christmas lights decorating the houses and canals.
As it is located in the Alsace region, Colmar is in one of the wine regions in France. Wine is readily available at any time of the day anywhere in France and its cheap too!
Stay in Colmar itself, at the Hotel Le Marechal. This hotel will make you feel right at home with its quaint French styled rooms and antique decor. A room here starts at 115 euros (SGD 190) a night.

Greek Islands

We just had to include Greece in this list, the all-time favourite for honeymooners! Think blue waters, bleached white and Smurf blue Greek architecture and infinity pools. Being in the Greek Islands will make you feel like you have escaped to the other end of the world, making it an adventure for the both of you! Whether it’s the famous Santorini or Mykonos, you will get endless ocean views, like waking up in paradise.
However from December onwards, there is a chance it will get snowy or rainy. The plus point is you won’t have to battle the heat in summer. If you still like sunny weathers, head there by November.
Try Katikies Hotel in Santorini for great views. A room starts at 380 euros (SGD 628) a night. There are definitely other places to stay. They are islands after all, and hotels with sea views are plentiful!

Here you go, our list of five romantic destinations! This list is certainly not exhaustive. What’s your most romantic vacation memory? Where did you go for your first vacation with your loved one? Share it with us in the comment box below!
