Football: ‘Liverpool Not Good Enough’

Jurgen Klopp was surprised his Liverpool side failed to perform his trademark pressing game in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle.

Newcastle eased the pressure on their manager Steve McClaren with the win on Super Sunday.

Georginio Wijnaldum was the difference between the teams, playing a big part in Martin Skrtel’s opening own goal after the break before wrapping up the points in injury-time with a classy finish.

Liverpool only had one shot on target in the game as they failed to match the heights of their previous away performances under Klopp.

Prior to the Newcastle defeat, Klopp had yet to taste defeat on the road and his team had scored 10 goals in their last two road trips.

“They deserved the win,” said Klopp.

“We were not good enough today. I don’t know why. I will have to go and analyse the game to know more about it. They worked hard, but we can do better.

“We can play much more football. We didn’t play any counter-pressing – the pressing wasn’t good.

“Newcastle not only played long balls, they build-up play but we wasn’t there. We wasn’t compact enough. It’s better you lose a bad game rather than lose a good game. That’s easier to make it better.”
