A new Olu designate, Prince Godfrey Ikenwoli Emiko, was yesterday announced as the new Olu of Warri and he is to be known as King Abiloye. Abiloye is the immediate younger brother to the late Olu.

This is the first time a brother is taking over from a brother in a monarchy that’s purely hereditary. It has always been from father to son.

The son was disqualified because maternally he doesn’t fit in. The qualification is that your (prince) mother must come from Itsekiri or Benin. Anyone who doesn’t fit into that is automatically disqualified. Following the official announcement of Olu’s death yesterday, a 90-day mourning period was declared and it forbids Itsekiri sons and daughters worldwide from every form of celebration including burial activities until the burial rites for the demise monarch are completed.

All Itsekiri adults must also put their clothes upside down, both male and female. According to Sunday Mirror, King Abiloye Godfrey Emiko, was the preferred successor of his father, Ginuwa ll who mounted the throne on Feb 7, 1936 till 1987.

Automatically there won’t be any Sallah celebration in itsekiri land.
